• Soon-to-be graduates of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine recently learned their residency placements during the National Resident Matching Program’s “Match Day,” an event at which all fourth-year M.D. students around the country simultaneously open their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in their chosen specialty. Evan Calvo matched into Psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
• Justin Ott has been named to the 2023 fall trimester dean’s list at Palmer College of Chiropractic’s campus in Port Orange, Florida.
• Ohio University announced members of its provost’s list. Qualifying students must possess a 3.5 or greater GPA. Local members of the provost’s list are Amanda Bakeoven, Marta Bavrovska and Matt O’Brien.
• Kutztown University athletics honored 42 student-athletes as part of the Pennsylvania Alpha Omega Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma in the National College Athlete Honor Society, including Shannon Remolde, a guard on the basketball team and a graduate of St. Basil. The luncheon recognized those student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and competition. To be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student-athlete must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA, NAIA, USCAA or NCCAA. The honoree also must achieve at least junior academic standing by the fifth semester or seventh quarter and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of a 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale). Remolded, a junior business administration major with a focus in accounting, was also named to the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District, student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50, and compete in 90 percent of the institution’s games or must start in at least 66 percent of contests. Remolded has a 3.98 GPA.
• Widener University recognized the 137 winners of its High School Leadership Awards.Local winners were James McFadden (Franklin Towne), who serves as a National Honor Society chapter officer and participates in Best Buddies and his school’s No Place for Hate Club while also striving toward earning his Eagle Scout Award; Julian Felix (New Foundations), who has aced two college-level courses, captained his school’s soccer team and teaching special-needs children how to swim; Julianna Chang (Philadelphia Academy Charter School), who is a member of the National Honor Society and a Minithon team that raises money for pediatric cancer; Sala Bouy (Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush), who is a Relationships First coach; Aliviah Allison (G.W. Carver High School of Engineering and Science), who spearheaded an initiative to bring a self-defense class to her campus; Juelz Palmero (George Washington), a member of his school’s Social Justice Club; and Annabella Davies (Nazareth Academy), who has been leading fundraising efforts for Naz-A-Thon, a dance marathon at her school benefiting Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
• National qualifier Matthew Weinberg, an Archbishop Ryan graduate and Kutztown wrestler, earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference first-team honors, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches. It is the second All-PSAC recognition for Weinberg. Weinberg came within one win of a national championship, finishing runner-up at 184 pounds at nationals, his highest finish to date. He is just the seventh Golden Bear to wrestle in a national championship match all-time. Weinberg is a two-time All-American and went 27-4 this season with his second Super Region 1 title.
• Widener University announced students named to fall 2023 dean’s list. The dean’s list recognizes full-time students who earned a grade point average of 3.50 and above for the semester. Local members of the dean’s list are:
