Police provide updates in Fox Chase

Police officials addressed the recent meeting of the Fox Chase Civic Association.

Joe Staszak, community relations officer in the 7th Police District, said there was a residential burglary on the 1100 block of Stanwood St. Two ATVs were stolen from the property.

The 7th district will host a Family Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at 1701 Bowler St. There will be food, giveaways, information tables, a DJ and police and fire vehicles.

Staszak is retiring after 34 years and will make his final appearance at a Fox Chase Civic Association meeting in July.

Mark Mroz, community relations officer in the 2nd Police District, said 31 people were recently arrested in the Northeast for retail theft. He said plainclothes officers were monitoring surveillance cameras in stores and contacted officers outside when they saw a theft in progress. Some of the arrests came at Wawa, which Mroz referred to as “Walk Away With Anything.”

Nine students at Spruance Elementary School were recently banned from the Wawa at 6400 Bustleton Ave. after the principal identified them on surveillance footage stealing items. If they are caught stealing from other Wawas, they will be arrested and banned from all Wawas.

Mroz said other Wawas experiencing a lot of thefts are at Rising Sun and Longshore avenues and 7912 Roosevelt Blvd.

Mroz said the district and the city Department of Licenses and Inspections are cracking down on illegal car washes, issuing $301 tickets and confiscating $20,000 in equipment from four illegal car washes.

There will be fireworks at dusk on Saturday, July 6, at Lawncrest Recreation Center, Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street.

Rockledge Police Chief John Gallagher said six vehicles had their windows smashed at about 3:45 a.m. on June 12. There was $400 taken from one car.

Gallagher said Rockledge is mourning the passing of Helmut Boehm, a World War II veteran who died June 10.

In other news from the June 12 meeting:

• Kate Friend, president of the civic association, provided an overview of zoning. Friend encouraged members to go to atlas.phila.gov to find information on property assessments, the Homestead Exemption, polling locations, nearby 311 activity and more.

• The ribbon cutting for the Fox Chase Lorimer Trail, scheduled for June 20 at Rhawn Street and Elberon Avenue, was postponed due to heat. Steve Phillips, president of the Fox Chase Town Watch, called the trail a “diamond in the rough.”

• State Sen. Jimmy Dillon has replaced state Rep. Kevin Boyle as organizer of the annual National Night Out celebration in the Fox Chase Elementary School yard, 500 Rhawn St., scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. There will be a DJ and food. At 5 p.m., there will be a leisurely bike ride escorted by police. Participants will be entered into a raffle for free bikes. Call 215-695-1020.

• Among those in attendance were Sean Dougherty, the Democratic candidate in the 172nd Legislative District, and Joe Picozzi, the Republican candidate in the 5th Senatorial District.

• Fox Chase Civic Association will meet on Wednesday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Loudenslager American Legion Post 366, at 7976 Oxford Ave. ••
