The Block Gives Back earlier this month held its annual Peace & Play Day at Ferko Playground, 1101 E. Cayuga St.
The day included a DJ, vendors, inflatables, games, volleyball, football, face painting, food trucks, HIV testing by Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, a visit by a fire engine and a watermelon-eating contest judged by City Councilwoman Quetcy Lozada.
The Block Gives Back is planning its annual Block 2 School, which will take place on Aug. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on the 6800 block of Torresdale Ave. The group will be giving out 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. There will be moonbounces, refreshments, a DJ and free resources. Donations are being accepted weekdays at the Block Shop, 6831 Torresdale Ave. Items being collected are notebooks, folders, pencils, pencil cases, rulers, glue sticks, crayons and hand sanitizer. ••
