State Rep. Jared Solomon joined the Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association as a city Department of Streets crew installed BigBelly trash and recycling cans at four locations along Bustleton Avenue.
The cans are now at Hellerman Street, Magee Avenue, Knorr Street and Tyson Avenue.
The units are decorated with images such as a Bustleton Avenue sign, water ice, soft pretzels and an Eagles logo.
There are two units at each intersection, attached and drilled to the ground at a combined 300 pounds.
Aides to City Councilman Mike Driscoll and state Sen. Tina Tartaglione attended the first installation, on the northwest corner of Bustleton and Hellerman.
Funding came from a state grant Solomon directed to OCCCDA.
“This has been an all-in approach,” Solomon said.
Solomon said the receptacles will help in the renewal and revitalization of the business corridor.
Solomon said there has been an effort to instill civic pride and change the look and feel of business corridors through banners, new facades, corridor managers and three-times-a-week street cleaning for the last eight years.
Solomon said better lighting and traffic patterns are coming, along with more BigBelly units at Bustleton and Longshore avenues, the 6500 block of Castor Ave. and the 6300 block of Roosevelt Blvd.
OCCCDA has its own street-cleaning initiative, and recently received high marks in the Taking Care of Business Litter Index. ••
