The Serve Philadelphia VISTA program is an AmeriCorps initiative placing full-time members in Philadelphia city departments to address poverty through long-term solutions.
Members serve 30 hours per week on projects that improve public services, expand resources, and build sustainable programs.
For those interested in the 2025–2026 service term, Serve Philadelphia is hosting three open house sessions:
- March 4, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST
- March 27, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST
- April 28, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST
The application period opens on March 3, 2025. Attendees at the open houses will learn about the program, the application process, and the types of projects VISTA members work on.
VISTA members focus on capacity-building rather than direct service. This includes:
- Creating tools, programs, and systems to improve city services
- Developing partnerships and securing grants to bring in funding
- Organizing outreach efforts to connect residents with resources
- Strengthening collaborations between agencies to increase efficiency
Each member’s project is assigned based on city needs. The goal is to develop solutions that continue to benefit Philadelphia beyond a member’s year of service.
Serve Philadelphia VISTA operates under the Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity (CEO), which has been the city’s Community Action Agency (CAA) since 1964.
CEO leads programs focused on:
- Benefits access to help residents receive essential services
- Financial empowerment to promote stability and economic mobility
- Housing security to prevent displacement and homelessness
- Workforce development to increase job opportunities
VISTA members contribute directly to these efforts by strengthening programs that assist low-income Philadelphians.
Beyond service, the program provides career-building experience. Many former VISTA members secure leadership roles in government, nonprofit management, and social policy.
