The Colored Girls Museum Celebrates 10 Years at City Hall

On Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m., The Colored Girls Museum (TCGM) and Creative Philadelphia invite all to attend a special reception in the Mayor’s Reception Room—City Hall, Room 202—celebrating the opening of a new exhibition honoring the Colored Girls Museum’s 10th anniversary, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me… Anymore.

On view through May 16, 2025, the exhibition features eight curated cases showcasing various pieces and artifacts from past TCGM exhibits, including work from Lorrie Payne, Barbara Bullock, and Rosa Leff.

“This exhibit celebrates 10 years of museum visitors coming into our Germantown home,” said Vashti DuBois, Founder and Executive Director of The Colored Girls Museum. “We view this exhibit as a family reunion, weaving together a tapestry of our community voices.”

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me… Anymore is inspired by Maya Angelou’s 1993 poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” in which a girl child confronts her fears – ghosts, shadows, and monsters – and her survival is a testament to our journey over the past decade. TCGM embodies the young girl in this exhibition through its curation of artworks that declare life doesn’t frighten us, even in the face of uncertainty.

“We are honored to partner with the Colored Girls Museum, which for 10 years has been a sanctuary for all and a role model to the arts community,” said Val Gay, Chief Cultural Officer and Executive Director of Creative Philadelphia. “This exhibition explores important themes like bravery, perseverance, and empowerment—traits that The Colored Girls Museum has demonstrated since day one.”

Located on the first and second floors of City Hall, TCGM’s Life Doesn’t Frighten Me … Anymore is curated by TCGM and presented through Creative Philadelphia’s Art in City Hall exhibits program, which transforms the building’s public corridors into a platform for the arts.

Visitors are invited to enter through the Northeast Visitors Entrance Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to view this exhibition through May 16, 2025, and other exhibitions on City Hall floors 1-5.
