St. Martin of Tours Elementary School recently held a Prayer-A-Thon, with students and staff praying the rosary and paying tribute to veterans and first responders.
The event took place on May 23, the start of Memorial Day weekend.
In the morning, a couple of grades at a time walked around the school praying the rosary.
In the afternoon, there was a ceremony in the schoolyard, followed by another walk around the parish perimeter. The school community was joined by representatives of the police department, American Legion Latin American Post 840 and Boys Scouts Troop 100.
All observed a moment of silence for peace and everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice. School windows were decorated with American flags and the words, “God Bless America” and “Thank You Veterans.”
Fourth-grade teacher Rick Conti led the rosary. The procession included people carrying the crucifix, the American flag, Papal flag, St. Martin’s flag and a banner for the Blessed Mother, as May is Mary’s month.
The prayers were dedicated to emergency responders, Pope Leo XIV, the intentions submitted by school families and all veterans, including those killed in service to the country.
Students in kindergarten through eighth grade walked along Loretto Avenue, Cheltenham Avenue, Roosevelt Boulevard and Sanger Street. ••
