
The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week honored five local youths with Student Achievement Awards.
GBCL president Jack O’Hara presented the students with framed certificates and $100 for outstanding achievement in community service and volunteerism.
The winners were nominated by their schools.
The winners were Jason Liu, of Maternity BVM, who was unable to attend; Abigail Frizzle, a Greenberg Elementary School eighth-grader who will attend Philadelphia Academy Charter High School; Taaki Thomas, a Baldi Middle School eighth-grader who will attend Central; Payton Killman, a St. Albert the Great eighth-grader who will attend Archbishop Wood; and Mae Abuayhood, a fifth-grader at Anne Frank.

• Capt. Steven O’Brien and community relations officer Al Fiorentino represented the 7th Police District.
A woman complained about the new speed bumps on Bustleton Avenue, saying it has already led to “congestion city.”
O’Brien mentioned 11 of the 31 recent thefts from autos have come from vehicles that were unlocked. Among recent stolen autos, 23 of the 68 were Hondas.
The commander said there was a gunpoint robbery on May 19 at 4 a.m. at the Karco gas station at 100 Byberry Road. The gunman took $2,000 from the register.
Another robbery took place at 4 a.m. on the 9900 block of Haldeman Avenue. Five males exited a car, punched the victim in the face and stole an iPhone and credit card.
A George Washington High School student waiting for a bus at Bustleton Avenue and Verree Road was jumped by nine teenagers trying to steal his Air Jordan sneakers. The teens punched and kicked the victim, then fled when officers arrived.
Residential burglaries took place at the following apartment locations: 2300 block of Woodward St., 2300 block of Tremont St., 8400 block of Bustleton Ave. and 10000 block of Bustleton Ave.
• Meredith Barr spoke about CORA Services’ Family Navigation Center. Barr, a social worker, directs the program, which offers free support services for families as they navigate behavioral health, educational and mental health systems in support of their children. • Tom Campion, of the Neighborhood Community Action Center, at Hayes Playground, 9850 Roosevelt Blvd., invited people to visit the center or contact him at [email protected] or 215-828-9864. The center handles issues such as graffiti, potholes, sinkholes, abandoned vehicles, trash pickup and broken street lights.
• State Rep. Sean Dougherty, joined by chief of staff Viktor Kagan, invited constituents to stop by his office at 7801-A Hasbrook Ave. for any help they need.
• Alice Udovich, an aide to City Councilman Brian O’Neill, said a free shredding event, sponsored by Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, will take place on Saturday, June 7, from 9-11 a.m., at O’Neill’s office at 11630 Caroline Road.
• Shayne Gittel, representing state Sen. Joe Picozzi, said there will be a Real ID pop-up event at Picozzi’s office, 12361 Academy Road, on June 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. The Register of Wills office will be on hand to offer services.
• District Attorney Larry Krasner and the External Engagement and Government Affairs Division announced the reopening of the application process for the DAO’s Violence Prevention Grant Initiative. This application round is focused on local, community-based 501(c)(3) organizations with an objective that centers around gun violence intervention, mentorship for girls, summer camps and trauma healing programs.
