One of the side walls of Spike’s Trophies has a fresh new mural – one celebrating the Eagles winning Super Bowl LIX.
Spike’s, 2701 Grant Ave., teamed with the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and Mural Arts Philadelphia for the new mural, which was unveiled last week.
The master of ceremonies was Howard Eskin, a Northeast High graduate who had a long career on sports radio and TV and now hosts a podcast twice a week.
David McShane was the lead artist on the mural, which Eskin called “sensational.”
The mural includes images of the Eagles’ 40-22 rout of Kansas City: Jalen Hurts throwing a pass, DeVonta Smith catching a pass, Saquon Barkley running with the ball, Zack Baun making an interception and Cooper DeJean scoring on a pick-six. The mural also includes images of coach Nick Sirianni and the Lombardi Trophy.
Others who helped paint the mural were J.C. Zerbe, Padron Venegas, Tommy McShane and Jim Roynan.
The new mural is next to one highlighting the Eagles’ victory in Super Bowl LII. That one was painted by McShane and featured the players who helped the Eagles beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots: Nick Foles, Brandon Graham, Zach Ertz, Jason Kelce and Alshon Jeffery, along with coach Doug Pederson.
As soon as the Eagles clinched Super Bowl LIX, Spike’s owner Keith Baldwin texted McShane to tell him it was time to start thinking of a new design.
Jane Golden, the longtime executive director of Mural Arts, noticed all the white wall space adjacent to the two Super Bowl murals.
“We’re going to keep winning and David will keep painting,” she said.
On another wall is a City of Champions mural from 2014 that was also painted by McShane. Baldwin credited Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame board president Ken Avallon with the idea for the City of Champions mural.
That mural is filled with highlights of great athletes and championship moments in Philadelphia sports history: Tom Gola, Joe Frazier, Bernard Hopkins, Bobby Clarke, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Mike Schmidt, Chase Utley and the Immaculata women and Villanova men college basketball champions.
Inside Spike’s is a Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Museum Preview Gallery, where a newly expanded exhibit showcases all of the Eagles’ championships: 1948, 1949, 1960, Super Bowl LII and Super Bowl LIX. New displays also include exhibits featuring Herb Magee, Irving Fryar, Bill Lyon, the Palestra and the Philadelphia A’s.
The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame will have its next induction ceremony on Nov. 6 at Live! Casino and Hotel. Among the inductees will be Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. ••
