Zoning dominates Lawncrest agenda

The Lawncrest Community Association last week discussed zoning and other neighborhood issues.

The LCA will be considering 11 zoning matters before the end of the year.

The locations are 6610 Hasbrook Ave., a body shop that is looking to add a paint booth; 6424 Rising Sun Ave., a planned event space; 5825 Rising Sun Ave. (at Rosalie Street), a proposed takeout sandwich shop and catering business in a former barber shop; 543 Van Kirk St., a proposed duplex; 636 Kerper St., a proposed duplex; 6012 Hasbrook Ave., legalization of a fence; 601 Devereaux Ave. (at Bingham Street), legalization of an enclosed deck; 311½ E. Godfrey Ave., a proposed duplex; 537 Sanger St. (at Colgate Street), a proposed grocery store; 5900 Rising Sun Ave. (at Van Kirk Street), a proposed handicapped parking spot; and 6325 Palmetto St. (near Levick Street), a proposal for five apartments.

At next month’s meeting, the LCA will consider three zoning cases, all presented by attorney Vern Anastasio. The three cases will be 6610 Hasbrook Ave., where a body shop wants to add a paint booth, with neighbors noting that the business is near a day care; 6424 Rising Sun Ave., where neighbors said the applicant has already opened an event space; and 5825 Rising Sun Ave.

In other news from the June 17 meeting:

• Madison Matera introduced herself as a city planner in the legislation division of the city Department of Planning & Development.

• Lawncrest Library, 6098 Rising Sun Ave., will host Meet the Author: Eric Velasquez on Friday, June 27, at 3 p.m. Velasquez is an award-winning children’s picture book author and illustrator. Free books will be available while supplies last.

• The 5 Points Night Market will take place on Thursday, June 26, from 5-9 p.m. on Rising Sun Avenue, from Cottman Avenue to St. Vincent Street, in Burholme. There will be more than 20 food trucks, music, vendors, live performances and activities for all ages. The free event is part of the city’s Wawa Welcome America festival.

• The Lawncrest 4th of July Celebration will take place on Saturday, July 5. Volunteers are asked to report to the area of Lawncrest Recreation Center’s swimming pool, on Comly Street, at 8:30 a.m. The event will have two sessions, the first from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a car show, two bounce houses, vendors, food and T-shirt sales. After a cleanup, there will be fireworks at dusk.

• In a show of hands, the following people were elected to LCA’s board: president Phil Grutzmacher, who also headed the group in the 1980s; vice president Heather Miller; secretary Carla Thornton; and treasurer Kathy Wersinger.

• Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Wednesday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
