The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, completing a three-game sweep. The Phillies finished the series with 48 hits and 29 runs. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 48 hits tied for the sixth most in any three-game series in franchise history. It was their highest three-game total since they collected 50 hits against the Chicago Cubs in 1999.
On Monday, the Phillies recorded a season-high 21 hits. On Wednesday, they added 20 more. Jayson Stark of The Athletic reported that this is the first time in the franchise’s modern era that the team recorded back-to-back games of at least 20 hits in a single series. In two of the three games, every Phillies starter recorded at least one hit.
Trea Turner went 5-for-6 in Wednesday’s game with a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored, giving him six multi-hit games in his last seven and extending his 10-game hitting streak in which he has batted .522 (24-for-46) with a 1.237 OPS. Kyle Schwarber added a home run, an RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single, driving in five runs to push his season totals to a career-high 109 RBIs and 45 home runs, the most in the National League and two behind Seattle’s Cal Raleigh for the Major League lead.
Max Kepler had three hits, including a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Bryson Stott added three hits and two RBIs. Turner, Schwarber, Kepler, and Stott were part of a lineup in which every starter had at least one hit in two of the three games. Brandon Marsh, Harrison Bader, and Kepler combined to go 6-for-13 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, five runs scored, and one RBI on Wednesday, as Bader reached base three times and scored twice while Marsh drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning that preceded a five-run rally. Since acquiring Bader at the Trade Deadline, the Phillies are 13-6.
As the Phillies produced this offensive surge, sportsbooks updated their markets. DraftKings listed them at -172 for their August 21 opener against the Washington Nationals, with a total of 9.5 runs. FanDuel had them at -166, Caesars at -170, and BetMGM at -175, with the same total. Action Network reported the line opened at -184 and moved down despite 84 percent of bets and 84 percent of money being on Philadelphia. Futures markets also reflected the team’s rise. At BetMGM, the Phillies were +750 to win the World Series after opening at +1100 on October 30, 2024. DraftKings and ESPN BET listed them at +600. BetMGM had them at +400 to win the National League pennant after opening at +600. Kyle Schwarber was listed at +1300 for National League MVP at DraftKings and +2000 at FanDuel. According to BetMGM, the Phillies accounted for 9.3 percent of World Series tickets and 7.7 percent of handle.
The Phillies’ offense since the All-Star break includes 54 home runs, the most in Major League Baseball in that span.
Their pitching was equally dominant. Ranger Suárez pitched 6.2 innings on Monday, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. Cristopher Sánchez followed Tuesday with 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts, tying his career high. On Wednesday, Jesús Luzardo allowed one run on three hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts in six innings, also tying his career high. Luzardo struck out the side in both the first and second innings, recording eight of his first nine outs via strikeout, becoming the seventh Phillies pitcher since 1974 to begin a game that way. His outing was his fifth consecutive quality start and lowered his earned run average for August to 3.00 across four outings.
According to Elias, the Phillies had three consecutive starts with double-digit strikeouts for the first time since at least 1893, the year the mound was moved to its current distance. Suárez, Sánchez, and Luzardo combined for 34 strikeouts, the most by Phillies starters in any three-game series in the modern era, which began in 1900. Including the bullpen, the Phillies recorded 46 strikeouts in the series, the most in any three-game series in franchise history. According to OptaSTATS, the Phillies had 46 strikeouts while batting only 15 times themselves, and their +31 strikeout differential was the second largest in any three-game series in the modern era. The record of +32 was set by the Phillies against the Cubs from August 17–19, 1964.
Seattle scored its only runs in Wednesday’s game on solo home runs by Julio Rodríguez and Eugenio Suárez. Rodríguez homered leading off against Luzardo. Mariners starter Luis Castillo allowed 10 hits and three runs in four innings. Tayler Saucedo and David Robertson pitched in relief and gave up additional hits and walks.
José Alvarado returned from an 80-game suspension on Wednesday. He pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out Cal Raleigh.
The Phillies played the series against Seattle immediately after a three-city, 10-game road trip. It was also the end of a 13-day stretch without a day off. Manager Rob Thomson said, “The most impressive part of it is it’s the backend of a 13-day stretch without a day off. And our guys came out with a lot of energy today, and the whole series was good, really — in every phase.”
The Phillies are 4-0 since placing Zack Wheeler on the injured list on Saturday night due to a blood clot. In those four games, they have averaged 10 runs and 15.3 hits.
Seattle finished its East Coast road trip with a 2-7 record. They previously lost a series against the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Mets. The Mariners returned to Seattle on August 22 to begin a series against the Oakland Athletics. The Phillies continued their homestand on August 21 with a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.
