Democrats urge ‘Yes’ on retention

The 35th, 55th and 62nd Democratic wards recently held their annual picnic in Burholme Park.

The picnic was hosted by ward leaders Heather Miller (35th), Bob Dellavella (55th) and Tina Tartaglione (62nd).

Attendees included committee members, their families, candidates and elected officials.

Among those on hand were City Councilmen Mike Driscoll, Anthony Phillips, Isaiah Thomas and Jim Harrity; state Reps. Sean Dougherty, Anthony Bellmon and Malcolm Kenyatta; city elections commissioner Lisa Deeley; former City Controller Alan Butkovitz; Common Pleas Court Judge Stephanie Sawyer; Municipal Court Judges Fran Shields and Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde; and judicial candidates Will Braveman, Deborah Watson-Stokes, Joseph Russo, Jennifer Santiago and Michael Parkinson.

Tartaglione, a state senator, urged those in attendance to vote to retain the three Democratic state Supreme Court justices in the Nov. 4 election.

If the Democratic justices lose, Tartaglione said, “We will be Texas,” contending that Pennsylvanians will lose voting and reproductive rights.

Dougherty, whose dad Kevin is one of the justices up for retention, pointed out that voters will see the retention races after those for city and state judges, district attorney and city controller.

“Vote bottom up,” he said. “We need Philadelphia to come out.” ••
