Nick Nurse Praises Quentin Grimes’ Work Ethic as Guard Rejoins Sixers

After months of uncertainty surrounding his future, Quentin Grimes officially rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers on October 1, 2025, by signing the team’s one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer for the 2025–26 season. The 25-year-old guard’s decision ended a lengthy restricted free agency period that stretched through the summer and into training camp. His return was confirmed by the team the same day, with the 76ers posting, “OFFICIAL: we have re-signed Quentin Grimes.”

Grimes’ re-signing came after the Sixers had already completed their first two practices of the preseason and traveled to the Middle East to participate in the NBA’s Abu Dhabi Games. Head coach Nick Nurse acknowledged that this timing put Grimes behind in learning Philadelphia’s updated system, explaining that assistant coaches worked with him individually to catch him up on new schemes and terminology.

He’s certainly behind with a lot of the things we’re doing; we obviously changed a lot of things we’re doing, and he’s got to catch up with that,” Nurse told reporters on Wednesday. “But even these last couple of days, we had a couple of coaches back that were putting him through all that stuff, you know, in a group setting, even though he was the only player out there, they fill in all the other spots to get him up to speed as fast as he can.

Despite the delay, Nurse said that Grimes arrived in excellent condition. “He’s explosive and athletic, he was energetic today, he played hard, and he looked like he’s been working out,” Nurse said. He added that Grimes had “a couple of shooting sessions here, while we were gone, and they did report that he was looking good.” Nurse concluded that Grimes “didn’t look like it was his first day, so he’s in decent shape and again, he’s in decent shape and very energetic and bouncy.

Grimes explained that he maintained his conditioning by training at the University of Houston, where he played in college. “I went down to [University of Houston]. If y’all know anything about Coach [Kelvin] Sampson, I was in pretty good shape down there working out with the guys and competing down there in some live action,” he said. Grimes described the waiting process during free agency as the toughest part of the offseason, but stated that he was “happy to be here right now.”

The Sixers’ backcourt currently includes Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecombe, and Jared McCain, who is recovering from a thumb procedure. Grimes said he has been using practice and off days to get more repetitions with teammates and learn the team’s offensive changes, stating that he has been “trying to get the terminology down and get as many reps as I can.

While Grimes was getting back into the lineup, sportsbooks started to adjust their odds based on how things were going for Philadelphia during the preseason and how fans and bettors were reacting.

According to BetMGM, the 76ers’ regular-season win total is listed at 42.5, adjusted down from early-summer projections of approximately 43.5. The sportsbook currently prices Philadelphia at +4,000 to win the 2026 NBA Championship. FanDuel lists the Sixers at +3,500 to win the title and +1,300 to win the Eastern Conference, while DraftKings also holds the team at +3,500 in the championship market. Division odds at FanDuel stand around +500.

For preseason action, the Orlando Magic opened as 4.5-point favorites over the 76ers at FanDuel, with a game total of 218.5. The moneyline sits at Orlando -176 as of October 10, 2025. Rotowire’s projection model lists the expected score as Magic 112.0, 76ers 107.5. These odds were impacted by confirmed injury reports: Jalen Suggs (knee) and Moritz Wagner (knee) are both listed as out for Orlando as of Thursday, October 9.

The 76ers’ participation in the NBA Abu Dhabi Games also factored into market sentiment. Philadelphia played two contests against the New York Knicks, losing 113–104 and 112–104. In those games, Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Kyle Lowry were held out. Tyrese Maxey scored 16 points, and rookie VJ Edgecombe logged notable playing time.

Futures markets stabilized after Grimes’ contract resolution, removing uncertainty over roster availability heading into the preseason. Books including Covers, Action Network, and VegasInsider currently list Philadelphia’s championship odds in the +3,500 to +4,000 range. VegasInsider ranks the 76ers behind teams such as Oklahoma City (+240), Denver (+750), and Cleveland (+850) in the latest market snapshot.
