St. Hubert defeated Archbishop Wood in penalty kicks to capture the Catholic League girls soccer championship at St. Joseph’s University.
It was the Bambies’ first championship since 2002, when they beat Little Flower under the direction of the late, great coach Mickey McGroarty. This year’s champs are coached by Shawn Wimsey, who’s only been on the job since May.
The Vikings entered the game as the four-time defending champions.
Wood scored first just 4:02 into the game.
St. Hubert tied the score with 11:16 remaining in the first half. Luca D’Andrea took a free kick that the Wood keeper deflected off the crossbar, and Bridie Musial kicked the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
The teams played 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime before PKs.
Grace Smith, D’Andrea, Saige Primavera, Kady Donnelly and Riley Roesner all scored for the Bambies.
The difference was a save made by St. Hubert keeper Quin Miller, who had a great game with 11 saves in regulation and overtime.
St. Hubert (12-8-1) went on to beat Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, 7-0, in last week’s District 12 Class 3A final, and was scheduled to face District One runner-up Strath Haven in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Nov. 4. ••
