Fox Chase Cancer Center recently hired Lisa A. Bevilacqua, MD, as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery. In addition to seeing patients at the main campus and Fox Chase – East Norriton, Bevilacqua will provide services at Temple Health – Jeanes Campus.
Bevilacqua completed her cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Her clinical and academic interests span minimally invasive thoracic oncology, robotic surgery and advancing surgical equity.
Bevilacqua earned her medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and subsequently completed her general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Bevilacqua has received numerous national awards, including the Robertson Scholarship at Duke University and the Dr. Patricia Numann Medical Student Award from the Association of Women Surgeons. She was also tapped to participate in several selective programs throughout her training, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Robotics Fellowship and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons Robotics Course.
In addition to her clinical accomplishments, Bevilacqua is a researcher and advocate. Her peer-reviewed publications cover a range of topics, including esophageal cancer, robotic surgery, gender disparities in academic surgery and health outcomes in “underserved” populations. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Annals of Surgery, JAMA Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy.
Bevilacqua has also demonstrated an interest in leadership and passion for surgical education through her roles as President of the House Staff Association at Jefferson, co-developer of a surgical curriculum for medical students and as a contributor to national conversations on equity and inclusion in surgical training.
