Temple Health last week held a celebration for the opening of Temple Women & Families Hospital, 1331 E. Wyoming Ave.

The 5-story hospital officially opened on Sept. 3. It’s in the site once occupied by Parkview Hospital from 1963 to 2003 and Cancer Treatment Centers of America from 2005 to 2021.

The hospital focuses on addressing maternal health care, as statistics show that there are 27.4 deaths per 100,000 live births in Philadelphia, compared to the U.S. average of 18.8.

The facility features advanced labor and delivery suites, single-patient postpartum rooms and an expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, blending state-of-the-art medicine with a strong emphasis on family presence and emotional support. The hospital also integrates outpatient and community health services, ensuring families have easy access to routine checkups through specialty care in one coordinated location.

The new hospital expects to deliver 2,000-plus babies each year, giving moms another option, as 13 maternity units have closed in the Philadelphia area since 1997.

The 41 NICU bays on the third floor and 32 maternity beds are nearly double the capacity of Temple’s main hospital.

In all, there are 385 employees. Free parking is available to patients.

Many of the rooms have nice views of Juniata Golf Club and Greenwood Cemetery.

The Nov. 12 event included guided tours.

Among those in attendance were Temple Health President and CEO Mike Young, who is retiring Jan. 2; Abhi Rastogi, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Temple Health and President and CEO of Temple University Hospital, who will succeed Young; Lori Shapiro, wife of Gov. Josh Shapiro; John Fry, President of Temple University; state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, a member of the Temple University Board of Trustees; and aides to City Councilwomen Quetcy Lozada and Nina Ahmad.

Young said the opening was four years in the making, since Temple paid CTCA $12 million for the facility and assets. The mission, he said, is to provide safe, healthy, stress-free maternity care the “Temple Way.”

“It’s about doing the right thing,” he said. “It’s a model of care delivery.”

Tartaglione said the new hospital will provide excellent care before, during and after childbirth. She described Temple as a lifeline for the community.

“It represents hope, compassion and progress,” she said. “Every baby deserves a healthy start.” ••
