The Upper Holmesburg Civic Association recently recognized veterans and their families as part of its Hometown Heroes program.
The program has placed more than 30 banners along Frankford and Torresdale avenues, featuring a picture of a veteran. The honorees are a mix of living, deceased and veterans killed in action.
At the UHCA’s Nov. 20 meeting, program chairman Bill Kenny mentioned the five most recent banners – for North Catholic High School, the U.S. Navy’s John McCabe and Anthony DeFinis, the Air Force’s Roman John Marcinek and the Army’s Lester Gunsenhouser.
Also appearing at the meeting was Sandy Bukowski, of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial, 108 Spruce St. The memorial honors the 648 Philadelphians killed in the Vietnam War. Bukowski said she welcomes free visits by schools, Scouts and senior citizens. For more information, call 267-973-0600, visit pvvm.org or email [email protected]
In other news from the meeting, state Rep. Pat Gallagher said his office at 8760 Frankford Ave. has information on veterans services and LIHEAP, among other programs.
Cinnamon Hill, community relations officer in the 8th Police District, encouraged people to use steering wheel devices to discourage car thefts and to have neighbors take packages inside, as crooks are following Amazon and FedEx trucks to steal delivered items from porches. ••
