Along the Way

In Early morning the sun rises above the Delaware

to the east, deep blue purple. The sky changes in

minutes to pale blue, then yellow/orange until the

sun passes above the horizon. Streams of color

reflect off the smooth stainless-steel curvature

of the diner on the avenue named for the Rising Sun.

Silver and red reflect images of sun/sky, of clouds

passing by. Art deco sign simply … Quaker. Fitting

for Philadelphia. As one opens the door the sound

of the heartbeat of city begins pulsing, red and blue

booths full, stools occupied as rhythm of dishes and

cups landing on tables fills the air. The song of the

waitresses and waiter, of hon, of sweetie, of babe

with the daily specials add to the orchestra of sounds.

With every pass through the kitchen doors, songs of

spatulas, whips, pots and pans, rhythm of opening

closing. Strong rich fragrant odor of bacon, sausage

scrapple, pancakes, waffles and home fries permeate

the diner as the sounds of flatware resonates.
