How the New 48-Team Format Works
This is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, up from 32 at every tournament since 1998. The format change introduces several new elements:
| Element | Qatar 2022 | 2026 World Cup |
|---|---|---|
| Total teams | 32 | 48 (+50%) |
| Groups | 8 groups of 4 | 12 groups of 4 |
| Total matches | 64 | 104 (+63%) |
| Advancement rule | Top 2 per group (16 teams) | Top 2 + 8 best 3rd-place (32 teams) |
| Knockout rounds | R16, QF, SF, Final | R32, R16, QF, SF, Final |
| Games to win title | 7 | 8 |
| Duration | 29 days | 39 days |
| Host countries | 1 (Qatar) | 3 (first ever tri-nation host) |
The brand-new Round of 32 sits between the group stage and the traditional Round of 16, meaning teams must win one extra knockout match to lift the trophy. Third-place advancement is ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, which makes dead-rubber final group matches far less likely.
All 16 Stadiums & Venues
Matches will be played at 16 existing stadiums across the three host nations. No new stadiums were built for this tournament. Eight of the 16 venues required converting from artificial turf to natural grass to meet FIFA regulations.

Why This World Cup Is Historic
The 2026 tournament sets records before a ball is even kicked:
- First 48-team World Cup in history (expanded from 32, the format used since 1998)
- First tri-nation host: three countries sharing hosting duties is unprecedented
- First World Cup in the US since 1994 (32-year gap)
- Mexico hosting for a record third time (1970, 1986, 2026)
- Canada hosting for the first time ever
- Estadio Azteca becomes the first stadium to host matches at three different World Cups
- 104 matches: the most in World Cup history (up from 64 in 2022)
- Four debut nations: Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan
2026 World Cup Final: MetLife Stadium
The tournament closes on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 3:00 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets (check out our Super Bowl Squares guide for more NFL content), and one of the largest stadiums in North America with a capacity of 87,157.
MetLife will host the first-ever World Cup Final halftime show, a move FIFA hopes will attract casual viewers and expand global viewership. For the tournament, the stadium has been officially renamed “New York New Jersey Stadium” under FIFA’s commercial naming policy, a temporary rebrand that strips sponsor names from all 16 venues during the event.
Natural grass has been installed specially for the tournament, grown at Tuckahoe Turf Farms in New Jersey and transported in 23 truckloads (roughly 8,500 square meters of turf). A new irrigation system, backup water tanks, and ventilation system were added to maintain the playing surface throughout the summer.
