Father Judge receives donation of biology lab, scholarship fund

The Friends of Father Judge High School, Inc. announced a multi-year $1.5 million commitment to renovate the Biology Laboratory at Father Judge and establish a new scholarship fund. Both will be named in memory of Francis and Catherine Brady, whose children attended St. Timothy School, Father Judge and St. Hubert. The gift was made by James Brady ’80 and Stephen Stines in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Brady’s lifelong commitment to Catholic education.

Brady, a retired biopharmaceutical professional, said, “It is a privilege to give back to Father Judge High School. Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand the extraordinary impact biotechnology can have — from curing disease to addressing environmental challenges. Through this investment in Father Judge, we hope to spark a lifelong passion for science — inviting students to explore early, dream boldly and realize their full potential, especially within the transformative field of biology. Father Judge High School has long been a cornerstone of opportunity in Philadelphia and strengthening it for future generations has never been more important. The Brady Scholarships will help expand access to this state-of-the-art facility for deserving students regardless of financial circumstances. In the Salesian tradition, this effort supports the next generation of ‘Judge Guys’ in living the vision of St. Francis de Sales to ‘Be who you are and be that well.’ ”

Stines said, “Supporting Father Judge is deeply meaningful to me as a way to honor the Brady family’s enduring commitment to faith, education and opportunity, and to help carry those values forward for future generations.”

The Catherine and Francis Brady Scholarship Fund will provide tuition assistance through two designations: the Catherine Brady Scholarship for Tomorrow’s STEM Innovators, supporting students with a demonstrated passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and the Francis Brady Scholarship for Building Bright Futures, supporting students who show leadership, service and commitment in fields beyond STEM. Any student, regardless of their field of academic study, will be able to apply for a scholarship under one or the other program.

The Rev. Joseph G. Campellone, OSFS, interim president of Judge, said, “The vision of our 3301 Capital Campaign is to create a school environment to give our students options that fit their diverse talents. Mr. Brady and Mr. Stines’ generous leadership gift will expand the many other options that already exist because of this successful campaign. More importantly, the new Biology Laboratory and the new Scholarship Fund will truly give our students the opportunity to make a difference in our world.

“On behalf of the entire Judge community, we are truly grateful to Jim and Steve for their belief in our school and for their kindness. Now, Mr. and Mrs. Brady’s legacy will live on forever and make a positive impact on our students.”

The renovation of the Biology Laboratory directly supports the continued expansion of the Advanced Placement and upper-level science offerings. The new laboratory will feature updated equipment, collaborative workspaces and technology that allows students to engage directly in advanced biological experimentation, preparing them for advanced study in science, engineering and health-related fields. ••
