Philadelphia DA Announces 21 Gang Members Charged in Sweeping Violence Investigation

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced charges against 21 individuals connected to a series of shootings and violent crimes across the city, the result of a multi-year investigation into rival street groups engaged in retaliatory violence.

Prosecutors said the charges are tied to more than two dozen incidents spanning 2022 and 2023, including a homicide, multiple non-fatal shootings, carjackings, and robberies. Authorities said the violence was driven by ongoing disputes between groups, with several incidents impacting bystanders.

The case stems from a presentment by the 33rd Philadelphia County Investigating Grand Jury, which found that members of the groups were involved in repeated acts of retaliation that escalated over time.

“This is a good day for the citizens of Philadelphia, including the residents of South Philadelphia whose neighborhoods have been terrorized by this senseless violence like many other neighborhoods,” Krasner said.

Officials said some defendants were taken into custody as the charges were announced, while others were already being held on separate matters. Additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

Prosecutors said the case developed as investigators followed leads from individual shootings and uncovered connections between suspects, ultimately linking multiple incidents to the same network of defendants.

“The continued investigations of those initial shootings, which were committed in back-and-forth retaliation, revealed other targeted shootings,” Assistant District Attorney Adam Farraye said.

Authorities described the violence as part of retaliatory shootings between rival groups, with incidents occurring across South and Southwest Philadelphia. In some cases, officials said individuals not involved in the disputes were caught in the crossfire.

The charges filed include offenses such as murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, and conspiracy. Prosecutors said the case builds on earlier efforts targeting the same groups and reflects ongoing enforcement aimed at reducing group-related gun violence.

“The charges we announced today are the continuation of the efforts we first disclosed a year ago with the sweeping indictments of these gangs based in South Philadelphia,” said Bill Fritze, chief of the District Attorney’s Gun Violence Task Force.

Investigators said the case involved coordination between multiple agencies, including the Philadelphia Police Department, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, federal authorities, and prosecutors, with detectives and analysts working to connect incidents across different investigations.

Krasner said enforcement efforts will continue and warned that authorities are focused on disrupting cycles of violence tied to these groups.

“I need to be put on notice now to anybody who is in these groups, thinking about being in these groups, or wanting to take the place of these groups,” Krasner said. “I have to put you on notice now.”
