Second Fatal Shooting in Three Years Rocks University City Market

A 26-year-old man has been killed after a shooting on Monday afternoon. The incident happened inside a University City grocery store, with the gunman fleeing the scene.

Police were sent to the 40th and Market Grocery in the 4000 block of Market Street at just after 4.30pm on Monday. The victim was found inside with significant gunshot wounds before being taken to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gunman Entered Store Armed, Witnesses Present

The shooting – which is the second fatal shooting at the same spot in the past few years – was seen by multiple customers inside the store. “Everything that transpired took place inside the store. There were approximately three other people inside that small store,” said Philadelphia Police Captain Timothy Stephan.

Police also confirmed that the victim – who is yet to be formally identified – was in the store for a period of time before the shooting happened, with surveillance video hinting that the shooter knew their victim.

“The victim, a 26-year-old black male, was approached by the shooter, who entered the store, gun drawn. Words were said between the shooter and the victim,” Stephan explained. Police believe an exchange occurred between the two men moments before the gunfire erupted.

The victim was believed to be talking to another person before the killer entered with their weapon and opened fire.

Two Shots Fired Before Suspect’s Escape

The suspect fired two shots during the attack, according to police accounts of the incident. “Once intentionally to the lower area, leg area, and the victim then fell to the ground and the shooter, prior to leaving the scene, fired an additional round, striking the victim in the upper abdomen area, and it appears to have gone into the victim’s chest,” Stephan detailed.

Personal belongings were found scattered at the crime scene and included shoes, a cellphone, and a hat. “The shoes that are inside the store that you can see behind me, along with the hat, belonged to the victim. They were being carried by the victim over his shoulder. Once he was shot, he then dropped items,” Stephan noted.

After the shooting, the suspect quickly fled the scene on what police believe was either an electric bike or an eScooter.

Suspect Description and Investigation Details

Police described the gunman as dressed entirely in black clothing, wearing glasses and a ski mask to conceal his identity. The victim’s identity has not been released by authorities as the investigation continues.

Surveillance footage from the store suggests the suspect and victim may have known each other, though investigators have not determined whether this was a targeted attack. Two witnesses were inside the market during the shooting, and police are working to locate the additional individual who had been conversing with the victim before the gunman arrived.

Community Voices Concern Over Recurring Violence

This deadly shooting represents the second fatal incident at 40th and Market Grocery in recent years. In 2023, a 21-year-old man was shot multiple times in the face and chest at the identical location, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for the University City business.

The repeated violence has deeply affected the surrounding community and local business owners who depend on foot traffic in the area, with local residents expressing their disbelief and shock.

Mahdi El, a University City resident said: “I come here like three times a week, maybe more. I’m really hurt by that. I’m disappointed.”

Ibrahim Ibneamin, who owns a restaurant adjacent to the grocery store, emphasized the broader community impact of the violence. “It’s really sad for the community because it keeps happening. It’s really sad, a young man losing his life, it’s really sad,” he said.

Ongoing Security Challenges

The shooting has put the ongoing security issues and economic challenges for nearby businesses back in the spotlight, with some forced to lock down during police investigations.

“We’re locked up, nobody can come inside. It’s bad for business. For the community. We need more security,” Ibneamin explained, highlighting how crime affects the entire commercial corridor.

Philadelphia police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call or text 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online through the department’s website.
