Prison officer charged for beating inmate

A Philadelphia corrections officer has been charged with official oppression, assault and related crimes for what District Attorney Seth Williams described as the “brutal beating” of an inmate at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Holmesburg last November.

Officer Larry Levy, 30, allegedly attacked an inmate after the inmate asked to wait outside his cell while his cellmate was using the toilet, according to a statement issued by the DA.

Initially, Levy told the inmate to “Get the (expletive) in your cell,” according to the DA. When the inmate walked to another corrections officer to ask the same question, Levy allegedly struck the inmate in the back of the head multiple times, tripped him to the floor, continued to beat him and sprayed him with mace.

Levy is a six-year veteran of the Philadelphia Prison System. Williams announced the charges on May 13. He is free on $10,000 unsecured bail and scheduled for a status hearing on June 12. Information about his employment status was not disclosed. ••
