Candidates gain notable support days before election

The special election in the 170th Legislative District is coming up on Tuesday, and the candidates are boasting some late endorsements.

On Saturday morning, former Gov. and Mayor Ed Rendell appeared in support of Democrat Sarah DelRicci.

Meanwhile, Republican Martina White collected three union endorsements.

Rendell stood on the back of a union truck outside DelRicci’s Somerton campaign office to rally Democrats. He was joined by former City Controller Jonathan Saidel and state Reps. John Sabatina Jr., Jordan Harris, Mike Hanna and Frank Dermody, the House minority leader.

About 100 people listened as Rendell described DelRicci as caring and dedicated, an animal advocate with a good resume and an “accomplished citizen.”

“It’s going to be refreshing to send Sarah to Harrisburg,” he said.

Rendell described Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget as bold, caring and ambitious for its increase in education funding and focus on job development.

“We need a Democratic vote in Harrisburg to support Gov. Wolf’s agenda,” he said.

DelRicci followed Rendell.

“I want to be the voice of the hard-working people of Northeast Philadelphia in Harrisburg,” she said.

As for White, she was recently endorsed by AFSCME District Council 47, the Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge and Transit Workers Union Local 234.

“I’ve remained focused on what’s important to the Northeast’s working families and seniors: good jobs and safe neighborhoods. To receive the endorsement of even more organizations dedicated to these same goals speaks loudly to voters that I’ll do what I’ve promised,” White said.

Sam Katz, an independent who has run for governor and mayor as a Republican, also endorsed White.

Earlier, White was endorsed by the police and firefighters’ unions and the Pennsylvania Business Council Political Action Committee, among others.

“We’ve got the momentum and we are working hard toward Election Day,” White said. “I’ve knocked on thousands of doors, attended civic and community meetings, and worked hard to earn the vote of local residents.” ••
