The Northeast Times would like to congratulate the following college graduates, students who were named to their school’s dean’s list, and area residents who recently received special honors.
Widener University welcomed 15 freshmen who have enrolled at the university as Apogee Scholars. Apogee Scholars are recognized by the Oskin Leadership Institute at Widener for their high potential to lead positive change on campus and in their communities. The students were all recipients of Widener High School Leadership Awards, and each received a $20,000 scholarship to attend Widener. As High School Leadership Award recipients, all of the students were nominated by their high schools for their abilities to stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools. Apogee Scholars plan and execute Widener’s annual Courage Day, and participate in the national Collegiate Leadership Competition, as well as attend lectures and special programs on campus. They also attend workshops on leadership through the Oskin Leadership Institute, where they are able to earn leadership certificates as they also complete coursework in their chosen academic disciplines. The class of 2022 Apogee Scholars include Bronwyn Kearney, who attended Nazareth Academy High School and plans to pursue civil engineering, and Cassidy Edwards, who attended Abraham Lincoln High School and plans to pursue exploratory studies.

Amanda Simone (cross country, track and field) was one of 44 student-athletes from Bloomsburg University to be recognized by the Division II Athletic Directors Association for work in the classroom with an Academic Achievement Award. The student-athletes were honored for having at least a 3.5 grade point average, attending a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college-level work and being an active member of their intercollegiate team.

Lehigh University welcomed the Class of 2022. The incoming class includes students from 44 states and 43 countries and territories. Local students are Raphael Keele, Michael Beaumont, Michelina Beaumont, Nathaly Rodriguez, Tasnim Chowdhury, Isaac Colon, Brandon Lima, Era Shuaipi and Holly Guinan.

The following students have been honored for academic achievement by being named to the Delaware Valley University dean’s list: Christine Buhalo, Caitlyn Steward, Kerry Banford, Alexandria Harrison, Brittany Rice and Keara Healy.

Daoni Fortune finished the Professional Edge Certificate Program through Northampton Community College’s Career Services Office. Fortune was one of 22 students who finished the flexible program, designed to give students valuable experience in resume and cover-letter writing, interviewing, LinkedIn and more. Fortune received a certificate of completion, a letter of recommendation from Career Services and recognition on the college website.

Brooke Kaminsky was among the East Stroudsburg University students who helped more than two dozen students and faculty from China kayak the Delaware River from the Kittatinny Point Visitors Center to Portland, Northampton County. The excursion was just one adventure in the three weeks of East Stroudsburg’s Sport Science program. Over the course of the cultural exchange, ESU representatives guided the Chinese group on trips to New York, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, as well as regional attractions such as Bushkill Falls and Dorney Park.
“I’ve been learning a lot from them about their culture and how they see our culture,” said Kaminsky, a sophomore majoring in health education. “It’s really just a great experience so far. We were playing football and everybody was enjoying it. I don’t think they had ever held a football before today. I was helping them position their hands properly on the ball. They had a blast.” ••
