Man interrupts burglary, beaten by intruder

A Rhawnhurst man was hospitalized on Nov. 10 after he returned home to find his back door broken and a burglar in his bedroom. During a subsequent scuffle, the intruder beat the victim with a crowbar.

Police described the victim as a 49-year-old man from the 2300 block of Emerson St. He arrived home at about 6:30 p.m., walked into his bedroom and found the burglar rooting through his jewelry. The homeowner confronted the man and a physical struggle ensued, police said.

Chief Inspector Scott Small described a violent fight that left furniture displaced and broken. At one point, the victim took the intruder to the ground, so the intruder struck the man on the head with a crowbar. The crook fled with seven of the victim’s watches. He was last seen exiting the back door, running eastbound toward Bradford Street then southbound on Solly Avenue. Police did not release a description of the unknown perpetrator.

The victim was treated at Nazareth Hospital for undisclosed injuries that were not life threatening. ••
