A Philadelphia School District police officer who was found unconscious in a Washington High bathroom last week died of severe coronary heart disease, according to the Montgomery County coroner.
Sgt. Daryl Giles, 50, had stopped a fight at the school earlier on June 2, a district spokesman said, and then told a co-worker he felt ill. Giles, a familiar figure in the high school, went missing, according to spokesman Fernando Gallard.
He was found unconscious about noon, Gallard said. The school nurse tried to revive him. Giles was taken to Holy Redeemer in Montgomery County and was pronounced dead there, Gallard said.
Last week, the Montgomery County coroner’s office reported heart disease was the cause of the officer’s death.
Giles, known to staff and students as “Sarge,” was an Army veteran and had served as a school district officer for 18 years.
Services were held on Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, 6118 Haverford Ave. Burial was in Merion Memorial Park, Rockhill Road, Bala Cynwyd. ••
