Police nab watch store thief

Michael Greed

Perhaps Michael Greed might still be a free man had he disappeared after he allegedly stole a watch from a Mayfair store on April 19. But he got greedy, according to police.

Greed allegedly returned to the same store, Henry of Mayfair, at 7402 Frankford Ave., later that day and stole more watches. Two days later, Greed sold two of the stolen watches to a pawn shop, police said. Investigators caught a break when a tipster saw surveillance video of the thefts and fingered Greed as the culprit. Acting on the tip, police arrested Greed on May 10.

Greed, 28, of the 4900 block of Princeton Ave. in Tacony, is charged with theft and related offenses.

Greed allegedly went to the watch store twice on April 19 and stole watches both times. He distracted the proprietor by asking to have a battery replaced on a watch that he had brought into the store, police said. When the shopkeeper went into his rear workshop, Greed allegedly raided a display case and fled with a Citizen watch. A short time later, he returned to the store in different clothing and repeated the grift, stealing several more watches, police said. ••
