St. Hubert’s advanced-placement art students displayed selected pieces of their work at an exhibit at Holy Family from April 24 to May 1.

The students in teacher Donna Cratin’s AP Studio Art class each produced a thematic body of work consisting of more than 10 pieces. They each selected a couple of pieces to be showcased at Holy Family’s Art Gallery, in the Education and Technology Center.

“I’m extremely proud of them,” Cratin said.

Senior Saralee Emile’s theme focused on children and their parents and how they are extensions of each other. She won a contest sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

“I liked the class. It challenged me. I enjoy doing art and testing my skill level,” said Emile, a Frankford resident who dances at En Pointe and is headed to Millersville to study nuclear medicine technology.

Junior Katherine Duffy’s theme centered on emotions she’s felt while listening to different types of music. A Neumann Scholar, she first began enjoying art while at St. Dominic. She was honored when Cratin selected her as one of five juniors to enroll in AP Studio Art and is looking forward to next year’s AP Drawing class.

“It’s a lot more demanding course than a regular art class,” said Duffy, who took Art 1 and 2 as a freshman and sophomore. “I definitely improved skill-wise. I want to go to art school and major in graphic design. That’s the field I’m interested in.”

Junior Joyce Szczurek’s theme was, “How can I relive memories with my grandma through literal and symbolic imagery?” Her one selection was being tucked into bed by grandma (JoAnn McDonnell) while the other was of her and grandma making jelly crackers. While Szczurek will pursue a career in the medical field, she plans to keep art as her hobby.

“The class has definitely been a challenge. It’s pushed me farther and helped me grow and get better. Mrs. Cratin is great,” she said.

St. Hubert president Lizanne Pando and principal Gina MacKenzie attended the April 29 exhibit reception. MacKenzie described the school’s art studio as “my happy place.”

“Our students are amazing artists,” she said. ••
