The Lawncrest Community Association listened to a proposal for a variance for a planned event space at 6424 Rising Sun Ave., the site of a former card and gift shop and a lock and safe business, at its recent meeting.

Business owner Anthony Jackson, a police officer and Northwood resident, said the space will be open three nights a week, no later than midnight. The business will be BYOB. The site will have surveillance cameras, and Jackson is open to host community meetings.

Right now, he has a one-year lease, but will extend it if he gets the variance.

The LCA approved a one-year variance, with the proviso that Jackson provide security for events.

The civic group also approved a take-out restaurant at 537 Sanger St.
