Cristopher Sánchez delivered a statement performance in his first career Opening Day start, striking out 10 over six scoreless innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers on March 26.
Sánchez allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter, repeatedly working ahead in counts and finishing hitters with his changeup as Texas was held scoreless through six innings. The outing continued the form that saw him finish second in National League Cy Young voting in 2025, and established early control for Philadelphia.
Kyle Schwarber opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, jumping on the first-inning opportunity to put Philadelphia in front. The early lead allowed Sánchez to attack the strike zone aggressively without pitching from behind.
Philadelphia added separation in the fifth inning when Alec Bohm hit a three-run home run, extending the lead to 5-0. The inning capped a stretch in which the Phillies consistently put pressure on Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi, who allowed five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
Texas struggled to generate sustained offense against Sánchez, managing only isolated hits through the first six innings and failing to put together a multi-run threat.
The game shifted, somewhat drastically, in the ninth. Jake Burger hit a two-run home run to get the Rangers on the board; Texas added another run later in the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. The late surge brought the tying run into play before Jhoan Duran entered and secured the final outs for the save.
The game was played in front of 44,610 and marked the managerial debut of Skip Schumaker with the Rangers. Despite the late rally, Texas was unable to overcome the early deficit created by Philadelphia’s power and Sánchez’s control.
Philadelphia also saw Justin Crawford go 2-for-4 in his major league debut, adding to a lineup that combined early power with consistent contact.
Sánchez enters the season under a long-term extension that keeps him with the Phillies through 2032, with a club option for 2033, reinforcing his role as a central piece of the rotation.
The series continues March 28, with Aaron Nola scheduled to face Jacob deGrom.
