Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of Tyhesia Street, a 46-year-old mother of six, whose body was found on Sunday inside her West Philadelphia residence on the 5500 block of West Girard Avenue.
Welfare Check Ends With Discovery of Body
Officers were initially responding to a wellness check at the property after a member of her family said they had not seen Street for a number of weeks.
Street was found in a second-floor bedroom with multiple stab wounds. Her husband’s sister had called police requesting the wellness check, according to family members who spoke with investigators.
The discovery has shaken both the victim’s family and the surrounding neighborhood, where Street was known as a caring community member. Street’s brother told investigators he last spoke with his sister on March 28 — almost two weeks before her body was found.
Family Remembers Beloved Mother
Family members described Street as a compassionate person who always supported those around her. They added that she was kind and caring and that she now leaves behind six children. Street was also a grandmother.
The family went on to express bewilderment over the murder and are unable to understand who would harm Street and why. They emphasized her role as a devoted mother and grandmother who prioritized her family’s wellbeing.
Investigation Leads to Custody
Detectives returned to the scene on Monday, conducting follow-up interviews with residents and examining potential evidence including doorbell camera footage from the property.
The investigation moved quickly, with sources confirming that someone was taken into police custody Monday afternoon for questioning related to Street’s death.
No charges have been filed as the investigation continues. Police have not released details about the suspect’s identity or potential connection to the victim.
Neighbors Express Shock and Fear
The violent crime has left longtime residents of the West Girard Avenue block disturbed and concerned for their own safety. Dawn Steplight, who lived near Street, told of her shock at the news.
“She was a good neighbor. Very nice lady,” Steplight said. “I was shocked. That’s terrible, terrible. And it frightened me because I’m so close. I can’t believe this happened.”
Damon Jones, who also lives nearby, reflected on the tragic circumstances surrounding Street’s death and the fact that her absence went unnoticed for an extended period.
“Would’ve never imagined something like that would occur, ever. And then for her to be missing for days and nobody noticed, none of us have noticed, it’s kinda sad,” Jones said.
Community Impact
The murder adds to concerns about violence in West Philadelphia neighborhoods, where residents have experienced multiple serious crimes in recent months.
Street’s death represents not only a personal tragedy for her large family but also a loss for neighbors who knew her as a positive presence in the community.
The extended period between her last contact with family members and the discovery of her body has raised questions about community networks and support systems.
Case Remains Open
Police continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as they build their case. The quick movement to take someone into custody suggests investigators may have substantial evidence, though officials have not disclosed specific details about their findings or the circumstances surrounding Street’s death.
The case remains active as detectives work to determine the timeline of events leading to Street’s murder and establish the relationship between the victim and the person in custody.
