Upper Holmesburg discusses sale of former Liddonfield site

A cloudy timeline for the redevelopment of the former Liddonfield Homes public housing site is coming into clearer focus, according to the leader of the Upper Holmesburg Civic Association.

During the group’s monthly meeting last Thursday, UHCA President Stan Cywinski reported that the formal sale of the property could be complete by the end of the calendar year. Cywinski said he spoke directly with lead developer John Parsons of BSI Construction last week. Parsons’ firm is under an agreement of sale with the Philadelphia Housing Authority for the 32-acre site at Torresdale Avenue and Megargee Street. He is “optimistic” that the federal Office of Housing and Urban Development will approve the sale within weeks.

BSI is working with Holy Family University to redevelop the site for a mixture of uses including retail businesses, university residences, university athletic facilities and assisted living or nursing care residences for seniors.

In the meantime, Cywinski said, the civic association will continue to work with local elected officials to improve maintenance of the vacant tract.

“I’d like to see a groundbreaking soon because pretty soon we’re going to start seeing trees there instead of weeds,” the UHCA president said. ••
