Bustleton Civic officers unopposed

This year’s election of Greater Bustleton Civic League executive officers pretty much will be a formality later in May.

No more than one candidate per seat was nominated during the league’s April 24 meeting at the American Heritage Federal Credit Union’s Carriage House on Red Lion Road.

No one opposed incumbent president Jack O’Hara, vice presidential candidate John McKeever, incumbent treasurer Joan Rhodes, incumbent corresponding secretary Brendan Glackin or Jack Bonner, candidate for recording secretary.

It was different last year when there were contests for four of the executive board’s five seats. O’Hara, then vice president, defeated McKeever, then the incumbent president. Rhodes, the incumbent treasurer, was defeated by Bob Hall. Maureen Greene won a contested spot as corresponding secretary and Marlene Markowitz won recording secretary. Hall, Greene and vice president Harry Haberkern, who was unopposed in 2012, all resigned earlier this year.

Rhodes came back when Hall quit. Glackin was appointed to replace Greene. Joe Guerra was appointed vice president. Markowitz and Guerra did not seek terms this year.

The election will take place during the next league meeting, 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at American Heritage.

In other business on April 24, City Councilman Brian O’Neill presented the league with a $2,000 activities grant to cover some of its expenses.

O’Hara said the league suffered a loss in an April 10 Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing. The zoning board approved several variances that would allow a used-car business at 9900 Bustleton Ave. League members had overwhelmingly opposed the variances. ••
