‘Healthcare in Retirement’ topic of NORC meeting

Two financial advisers visited last month’s meeting of the Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community and outlined how senior citizens could pay for life’s essentials.

Mark Michelman and Dominic Marinucci, of the U Financial Group, spoke on, “A Guide to Covering Your Medical Expenses: Healthcare in Retirement.” They used a slide show to explain that a senior’s three costliest living expenses are housing, food and health care.

Michelman and Marinucci explained that there are a number of dependable sources of income that can pay for those expenses. Reliable sources of income include a senior’s pension, Social Security check, annuity, 401k plan, savings account or even a part-time job.

In developing a financial strategy, the advisers include money that can be spent to travel or entertain family and friends.

In other news from the Feb. 28 meeting, a nurse from the St. John Neumann Nursing Home provided free blood-pressure screenings.

Also, Carol Rogers and Michael Olorunnisola spoke about HealthyPhiladelphia’s goal to bring a health care center in the Northeast. The center would be for people needing simple checkups or those with chronic health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and asthma. It would also offer cancer screenings.

Rhawnhurst NORC, which provides services to senior citizens in the 19111, 19149 and 19152 ZIP codes, will not hold a luncheon in March because of Easter and Passover.

The group will meet again at noon on April 25 at Rhawnhurst Presbyterian Church, at 7701 Loretto Ave. The guest speaker will be Vicki Hoak, CEO of the Pennsylvania Homecare Association. She will speak on “Legislative Changes Affecting Seniors and Their Care.” The cost is $5 and includes a box lunch.

The following month’s meeting will take place on May 23 at Congregations of Ner Zedek synagogue. State Sen. Anthony Williams and state Rep. Brendan Boyle will discuss poverty issues and legislation that would require the teaching of the Holocaust in public schools.

The NORC’s annual spring cleaning day is set for Sunday, April 28. Volunteers will help seniors by cleaning yards, replacing smoke alarm batteries and hard-to-reach light bulbs, removing winter weather stripping, turning over mattresses and installing window air conditioners.

To volunteer for two-hour time slots or to request assistance, call 215–320–0351. ••
