Schwartz visits Lawncrest

The LCA observed a moment of silence for former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who died Oct. 14.

In other news from the Oct. 16 meeting, a number of neighborhood organizations promoted upcoming events open to the community.

• The Philadelphia Protestant Home, at 6500 Tabor Ave., will hold a pancake and sausage breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 to 11 a.m., in its social hall. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

• On Saturday, Nov. 10, there will be a cleanup of the grove area at Lawncrest Recreation Center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes, brooms and gloves.

The cleanup will be held in preparation for Veterans Day services on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Municipal Court Judge Patrick Dugan, a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

• The Tzu Chi Foundation is collecting gently used winter clothing for needy people in the community. Donations are being accepted through Nov. 11 at Asia Cafe, at 5694 Rising Sun Ave., and on the front porch of the property at 6141 Argyle St.

The clothing will be given away on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Lawncrest Recreation Center.

• Bethany Academy, a childcare facility, recently opened at 6537 Rising Sun Ave. It is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center welcomes infants and toddlers, and offers pre- and after-school programs. Call 215–742–1300.

Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m., at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
