The Danny Craige Foundation last week presented four scholarships at the St. Martin of Tours graduation awards ceremony.

The scholarship winners were Daniel McGarry, Margaret Cahill, Jordan Lewis and Bryan McGarry.

The awards ceremony took place on the evening of June 13, and members of the Craige family were in attendance.

The students graduated at a Mass earlier in the day, and Judy Craige Flanagan — Danny’s sister — took part as a member of the 50th-anniversary graduating class.

Craige was a St. Martin’s graduate who died of esophageal cancer in 2006 at age 56. He was a veteran coach, including stints directing football teams at Frankford Boys Club and basketball teams at St. Martin’s.

Danny Craige was one of seven children, all of whom received their sacraments and graduated from St. Martin’s. Five of them married fellow parishioners.

Craige’s family and the St. Bede the Venerable CYO created the foundation in his memory.

The foundation also provides scholarships for students at St. Bede, located in Holland, Bucks County. That school’s winners were Noelle Leinenbach, Brenna Lynch, Kyle Ortiz and Dante Baratta.

The foundation also made a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund of La Salle Academy, a private elementary school near Second and Jefferson streets.

The scholarships honor Craige’s legacy of family, caring and the importance of being involved and giving back to the community.

The application process includes essays, academic achievements and personal and teacher references.

This year, the foundation distributed $26,000. The total over the years is $140,000. Money is raised at a golf tournament and a beef-and-beer benefit. This year’s tournament is set for Sept. 17 at North Hills Country Club.

Donations can be sent to The Danny Craige Foundation, 66 Green Drive, Churchville, PA 18966. ••
