Frankford artist is seeking inspiration

Cesar Viveros, the artist who will create a series of murals for the Frankford business corridor, wants to hear residents’ stories about the neighborhood next Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Frankford Community Development Corporation, 4900 Griscom St.

These personal narratives will be videotaped and put online as well as become important inspirations for Viveros’ creations for the city’s Mural Arts Program.

This will be the second session. The first was held at the CDC on Nov. 5.

It’s easy to participate. Contact Netanel Portier, project manager, at 215–685–0725 or at netanel@muralarts.org. Or, if it’s convenient, just stop by the CDC from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

These one-on-one sessions with Viveros are a continuation of the process Mural Arts uses in creating long-lasting and visible art.

Two group sessions were conducted last month at Denby’s Sweet Sensations on Frankford Avenue.

Residents who gathered at the first, on Oct. 5, suggested incorporating images of the neighborhood history, green space, ethnic and religious diversity, talented residents and architecture into the Viveros’ Imagining Frankford murals.

After gathering more information, Viveros will begin putting together his designs, which are expected to be ready for program approval in January. Work will begin soon after that. Installation, which depends on the weather, could begin next spring.

The murals will be on Frankford Avenue or just off the avenue; some will be visible from the El.

Portier has said that Viveros will try to get a studio in Frankford in which to do his work. She said there will be “community paint days” and “studio days” during which residents can take part in the murals’ creation.

The murals will vary in size but will be “a cohesive series of public artworks,” she said.
