Oxford Circle man amputates own arm

An Oxford Circle man with a history of mental illness, according to police, used an electric saw to amputate his own arm at his home on Oct. 12.

The 34-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized in critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He is expected to survive. It is not known if his limb was surgically reattached. After slicing through his arm, police said, the man cut the detached limb into two pieces.

Authorities discovered the gruesome scene at about 8:30 p.m. when firefighters went to the 800 block of Brill St. in response to a report of an industrial accident. They found the injured man with his forearm severed.

They initially were unable to find the detached limb because the man apparently had tried to dispose of it. ••
