Lawncrest mourns loss of community activist

Kenneth A. “Ken” Hyers, the longtime president of Lawncrest Town Watch, died last Friday at age 57.

Hyers also had been a 35th Ward Republican committeeman, vice chairman of the 2nd Police District Advisory Council for four years and chairman of the committee that produced the annual 2nd PDAC community day.

Each month, he’d attend the Lawncrest Community Association meetings and urge his neighbors to join Town Watch. Last fall, he was elected 2nd PDAC chairman for the 2011 term.

However, he never assumed the chairmanship because he was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.

After the diagnosis, friends and family organized a beef-and-beer benefit for him in May at Presentation BVM church hall.

“Ken was generally a good guy and an active community leader,” said Larry Genetti, the longtime treasurer of the 2nd PDAC. “The Lawncrest community and his family have suffered a tremendous loss.”

Hyers is survived by his wife Maryann; children Ken, Paul, Patrick, Jennifer Ehrmann, Ann Randolph and Megan Boyle; his mother Nancy; brothers Frank and Bob; and six grandchildren.

A viewing and funeral service were held Tuesday night and Wednesday morning at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 6902 Rising Sun Ave. Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Temple University Hospital Lung Center, 3500 N. Broad St., Suite 1101, Philadelphia, PA 19140. ••
