Monsignor Mortimer, longtime St. William pastor, dies at 91

Monsignor James E. Mortimer, pastor emeritus of St. William Parish, died on Saturday. He was 91.

Reception of the body will be held at St. William’s lower church on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a viewing until 8 p.m.

A viewing will also be held at St. William’s upper church on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The Rev. Timothy C. Senior, an auxiliary bishop, will celebrate a funeral Mass at 11 a.m.

Among those concelebrating the Mass will be Monsignor William J. J. O’Donnell and the Revs. David B. Machain, Alfonso J. Concha and Joseph G. Watson, who will be the homilist.

St. William is at 6200 Rising Sun Ave. in Lawncrest.

Mortimer is survived by his sister, Ellen V. Jones, and nephews and nieces. Interment will be at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Penndel.

Mortimer was the son of the late James E. Mortimer and Ellen (Deegan) Mortimer. He attended St. Bartholomew Parochial School and St. Joseph’s Prep before entering St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Mortimer was ordained in 1952 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul by Archbishop John F. O’Hara and named Honorary Prelate to His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, in 1976.

Mortimer served as parochial vicar at St. Jerome Parish in Tamaqua. He was on the faculty at St. Thomas More and Cardinal Dougherty high schools, He was principal at St. Pius X High School in Pottstown and Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield.

In 1980, he was appointed pastor at St. William and named pastor emeritus in 2002.
