Green infrastructure improvements coming to Castor Gardens

A design has been completed for green infrastructure improvements near Max Myers Playground and Gilbert Spruance Elementary School.

Water Department outreach specialist Hailey Stern addressed last week’s meeting of the Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association meeting.

Stern told the crowd that a design has been completed for green infrastructure improvements near Max Myers Playground and Gilbert Spruance Elementary School.

The city will put out the contract in July, and the lowest bidder will get the job. Construction is expected to begin in the fall. Plantings will take place in the spring.

Additions to improve stormwater flow will include rain gardens, planters, tree trenches, subsurface storage basins and street bump outs with trenches.

On another subject, Stern encouraged people who need help paying their water bills to call 215–685–6300 or go here.

Also, zero-interest loans are available for people facing basement flooding or service line repairs. Consumers can also reach out for water conservation help.

In other news from the June 18 meeting:

• Lt. John Craig and community relations officer Mark Mroz, of the 2nd Police District, distributed crime prevention tips and told residents that the district received 10 officers from the latest Police Academy graduating class. They will be assigned to foot patrols in areas with violent and property crimes.

To reach the lieutenant, email John.Craig@phila.gov

• The city will hold a meeting on the opioid crisis on Tuesday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Max Myers, 1601 Hellerman St.

• The swimming pool at Max Myers is open. An exterior wall was recently painted, and a mural is planned. Security guards patrol all city pools, off hours, around the clock.

• Take Back Your Neighborhood will meet on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at Max Myers. ••
