Holmesburg Community Day on Saturday

The Holmesburg Recreation Center Advisory Board and Holmesburg Civic Association will sponsor Holmesburg Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, 4500 Rhawn St. The event will take place rain or shine.

There will be appearances by WXPN’s Kathy O’Connell and the fire department, performances, entertainment, face painting, balloon sculpture, characters, food, refreshments, door prizes and voting machine demonstrations. Call 215-685-8714. ••

Fall Festival and Corn Roast

St. Andrew’s In the Field, 500 Somerton Ave., will host its annual Fall Festival/ Corn Roast on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will include a flea market, raffle baskets, bake table and craft tables. There will also be hot dogs, burgers and funnel cake along with roasted corn. ••

Schoolbag giveaway on Friday

Triathlon in Warrington

The fourth annual Warrington Cares Sprint Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8, at 7 a.m.

The event begins and ends at the Mary Barness Tennis and Swim Club, at 2501 Freedoms Way, Warrington.

The race consists of a 300-yard swim, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5K run through the streets of Warrington.

Block party on Saturday

Senior expo on Saturday

City Councilman Al Taubenberger and CareGivers America, in partnership with Councilwoman Cherelle Parker, will be holding a senior health and resource expo on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6401 Martins Mill Road.

The event will feature a DJ, prizes, giveaways, 30-plus vendors and light refreshments. ••

Holocaust survivor to give lecture

On Sunday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Gratz College, 7605 Old York Road, Elkins Park, the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center of Philadelphia will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the book, Your Name is Renee.

The book, by Stacy Cretzmeyer, details the experiences of featured speaker Ruth Kapp Hartz, a hidden child survivor of Nazi-occupied France during World War II.

Scenes from the play Beyond the Blue Windows, a dramatization of Hartz’s life story by Deanne Scherlis Comer, will be performed.

Hartz will be selling and autographing her book for $20.

Admission is $15. Children 17 and younger are admitted free.

Learn about religious life

Mayfair pregaming Eagles game

The Mayfair Business Improvement District will welcome a live broadcast of the WIP SportsRadio Go Birds pregame show on Sunday, Sept. 15, from noon to 3 p.m., at Frankford and Cottman avenues.

Go Birds hosts James Seltzer and John Barchard will be talking about the Eagles at Atlanta Falcons that night at 8:20 on NBC.

Visitors will get a chance to meet the Eagles cheerleaders, see a 2018 Super Bowl ring and get autographs and photos with an Eagles alumni player.

The afternoon will also include the WIP prize wheel, a football toss challenge and food and drinks from Factory Donuts, Rita’s Water Ice, Montessini Pizza and the Grey Lodge Pub.

The pregame show will take place at the same time as a cultural festival, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. ••

Cemetery visits planned

KleinLife is organizing an excursion on Thursday, Oct. 3, to cemeteries in Delaware County.

The trip will depart from KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., at 10 a.m. and will return about 3 p.m.

The visits will be to Mt. Jacob Cemetery, 700 W. Oak Lane, Glenolden; Mt. Sharon Cemetery, 500 E. Springfield Road, Springfield; and Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 1200 Bartram Ave., Collingdale.

Cost for the excursion is $10 and includes a boxed lunch.

Designer Bag Bingo on Oct. 13

St. Bernard Church will sponsor a designer bag bingo on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

The cost is $40 and includes a buffet, beer, wine, soda and 11 games of bingo. There will also be raffle baskets, including gifts for men, and a 50/50.

Concert on Sept. 20

The Northeast Older Adult Center, 8101 Bustleton Ave., will host a concert by the City Rhythm Orchestra on Friday, Sept. 20, from 7-9 p.m.

Order a Vietnam Veterans memorial paver

The deadline is Sept. 5 to order a 12-inch by 12-inch granite paver to benefit maintenance of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Front and Spruce streets. The cost is $400.

The site honors the 648 Philadelphians who died in the Vietnam War. The pavers include four lines of text with 21 units per line.

The public is invited to a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the memorial.

The Friends of Ryerss will sponsor a flea market on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Burholme Park, behind the golf range, at 7370 Central Ave.

The cost for vendors is $20 in pre-registration and $25 on the day of flea market. Vendors must bring their own table. Checks can be dropped off at Ryerss Museum & Library on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or mailed to Friends of Ryerss, 7370 Central Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111.

Benefit run/walk for 9/11 victim

The ninth annual Alisha C. Levin Run to Remember will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at Northeast High School, 1601 Cottman Ave.

Levin, who grew up on Wells Street in Castor Gardens, was killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. She was 33.

Levin was a 1986 graduate of Northeast. She later graduated from Hofstra University. She worked for three years for Fuji Bank in the World Trade Center’s South Tower.

The event supports the Alisha C. Levin Memorial Fund, which is used to provide scholarships and fund programs for Northeast High School and Hofstra University students.

Registration for the 5K run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. The 5K will begin at 10 a.m. The cost is $25. For information, visit alishalevinmemorial.org. ••

Run for Peace to aid 9/11 fund

The annual Run for Peace will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Penn Charter, 3000 W. School House Lane in East Falls.

The event is in memory of Northwood native Peter K. Ortale and Kenny Caldwell, Penn Charter graduates who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Registration for the 5K run and 1-mile family fun walk will start at 8:15 a.m. The run will kick off at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 9:05.

The cost is $25, or $10 for children.

Ortale grew up on the 4900 block of Castor Ave. and attended St. Martin of Tours, Penn Charter and Duke University, where he was a three-year All-American lacrosse player. At the time of his death, at age 37, he was working for Euro Brokers on the 84th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York.

Donations to the Peter K. Ortale Scholarship Fund can be sent to William Penn Charter School, 3000 W. Schoolhouse Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144. The fund seeks to provide tuition assistance to an upper school student who, like Ortale, exhibits the qualities of the scholar-athlete and demonstrates a high level of motivation, self-reliance and leadership, both in the classroom and on the playing field. ••

State gives PATH $2 million

People Acting to Help Inc., a service provider for children, adolescents and adults with behavioral health needs as well as adults with intellectual disabilities, received a $2 million grant from the state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.

PATH applied for the award to help fund its move to Castor and Cottman avenues, on a former Firstrust Bank property. The agency will renovate the former bank and construct two buildings.

Elizabeth Andl-Petkov, PATH’s president and CEO, thanked Gov. Tom Wolf, Mayor Jim Kenney, state Sen. John Sabatina Jr. and state Reps. Kevin Boyle, Angel Cruz, Jason Dawkins, Mike Driscoll, Joe Hohenstein, Tom Murt, Ed Neilson, Jared Solomon and Martina White. ••
