Planning continues for Mayfair arts festival

The festival will take place Saturday, April 14.

Planning continues for the first Mayfair Spring Arts Festival, which will take place on Saturday, April 14, along Frankford Avenue from Princeton Avenue to Tyson Avenue.

Hours will be from noon to 3 p.m., with a kickoff news conference. The streets along that stretch of Frankford Avenue will close at 11 a.m.

The rain date is April 21.

At the news conference, City Councilman Bobby Henon and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program will discuss seven murals that will be created throughout the 6th Councilmanic District in upcoming months.

The planning committee met last week at Stein Your Florist Co. to make preparations for the festival, which organizers hope becomes an annual event.

Dunphy Motors, which recently became a corporate sponsor of the Mayfair Business Improvement District, has donated a minivan that will be painted by Art History 101 owner Jay Pross.

Also being painted will be the three trash cans at Frankford and Princeton. The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion will lead butterfly-themed crafts. The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce is expected to bring performers from Settlement Music School. Art students and musicians from St. Hubert High School are also expected to participate.

The afternoon could also include canvas painting, oil painting, photography, art demonstrations, art sales, taxidermy, face painting, glass blowing, stilt walkers and food.

The committee will meet again on Wednesday night. ••
