John Weinrich

John Weinrich has filed to run as an independent in the 152nd Legislative District.

The seat is held by Republican Rep. Tom Murt, who is not seeking re-election.

The other candidates are Republican Karen Houck, a former member of the Upper Moreland School Board, and Democrat Nancy Guenst, mayor of Hatboro who was endorsed Monday by former President Barack Obama.

The district includes portions of Bustleton and eastern Montgomery County.

Weinrich, of Upper Moreland, ran for the seat in 2004 as a Republican and 2006 as a Democrat, losing both times in the primary.

This time, Weinrich thinks he can win because the state no longer allows straight-party voting.

Weinrich is a Realtor, and his family runs a bakery in Willow Grove.

If elected, his priorities would be job creation, the elimination of school taxes for homeowners, a ban on large assault weapons, elimination of tax collector offices, treatment options for addicts, an increased minimum wage, abolishments of state liquor stores, free community college for needy students, legislative term limits.

Weinrich, who is married with three children, promises to run a positive campaign.

The election is Nov. 3. ••
