Wawa last Friday opened its newest store at 9101 Frankford Ave. (at Academy Road).
The store, with gasoline pumps and beer and wine sales, replaces a smaller store a block away at Frankford and Linden avenues.
The first 100 customers received Wawa T-shirts.
The 8th Police District won a hoagie-building contest, earning a trophy and $1,000 for the 8th Police District Advisory Council.
Also earning $1,000 were runners-up Engine 46 (for Local 22 charities) and the USO and Pennsylvania National Guard Armory, which each donated its winnings to the USO.
Store general manager Matt Murphy cut the ribbon to welcome customers. There are about 35 employees.
Also in attendance were Pam Henshall, president of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and Wally Goose, the Wawa mascot.
The store offers curbside pickup, self-checkout and a chance for customers to contribute to a fund for Philabundance and other food banks. ••
