Philadelphia Legal Assistance is a 25-year-old nonprofit that provides legal aid in civil cases. Most of its funding comes from the federal government.

The bulk of its work is in family law, unemployment compensation and consumer housing.

To be eligible for help, an individual cannot make more than 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The person must either live in Philadelphia or have a case based in the city.
