Four students from schools within the 170th Legislative District have been chosen as the winners in the There Ought to be a Law contest, sponsored by Rep. Martina White.

“Each year the submissions are creative and well-organized; this year was no different,” White said. “The subjects offered by the students were diverse and thought-provoking, which reflects well on their parents and teachers.”

The proposed laws were judged by a panel consisting of Councilman Brian O’Neill, 8th Police District community relations officer Chris Hanejko and longtime police department advocate Elsie Stevens.

The winners are:

• Isabelle Rogers, Philadelphia Academy Charter School, fourth grade. Law: Require cameras on school buses to automatically ticket motorists who speed through school zones.

• Carter Foster, St. Christopher, fourth grade. Law: Mandate the inclusion of sports facilities in all city parks, as participation in sports promotes physical fitness, mental development and community bonding opportunities.

• Austeja Stanciauskas, St. Anselm, fifth grade. Law: Have parking tickets fund charities that fund housing for veterans.

• Kaitlyn Martinsen, Stephen Decatur, fifth grade. Law: Require community service once a month.

The winners have been invited to the Capitol to have lunch with White and tour the historic building. They will also be recognized on the House floor. ••
