Shaare Shamayim could be moving

Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, a synagogue that has been at 9768 Verree Road in Bustleton since 1963, could be moving.

Though executive director Jacques Lurie was hesitant to give details, sources say a local church that worships at four sites made the synagogue – which was not for sale – an offer it might not be able to refuse.

The synagogue’s executive and general boards have unanimously voted to recommend a sale.

The congregation – made up of about 300 families – will meet on Sunday and vote.

“In no way is it a done deal,” Lurie said. “The congregation will have to decide what it wants to do.”

If the congregation approves the sale, Shaare Shamayim is expected to move to the site of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel – known by most as KI – at Township Line and Old York roads in Elkins Park.

Shaare Shamayim would use the space occupied by Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El, which is merging with another synagogue. ••
