Local woman wins Transplant Games medal

Laverne Clark

Rhawnhurst’s Laverne Clark, a heart-donor recipient, won a silver medal in Bowling Doubles at the Transplant Games of America, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Clark was one of four organ recipients from Philadelphia who competed as part of the Gift of Life Donor Program’s Team Philadelphia, which also included participants from Eastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and Delaware.

Rafiah Cheeks, a liver recipient from East Mount Airy, won a gold medal in Mixed Bowling Doubles.

Janet Dennis, a heart recipient, won silver medals in Shot Put and Long Jump, and bronze medals in Discus and Softball Throw. 

Nilsa Edmonds, a liver recipient, won silver medals in Cornhole Mixed Doubles and Darts. 

The Transplant Games is held every other year as a celebration of life and donation, featuring athletes and teammates who are living donors, organ transplant recipients and bone marrow, cornea and tissue transplant recipients.

Members of Team Philadelphia brought home 125 total medals in all age groups: 70 gold, 30 silver and 25 bronze.
